Creativity in the form of content writing for social media and emails doesn’t come easily to all busy entrepreneurs.
Whether you are riding solo or are a start-up, writing your own content can be a necessity. As the founder of your business you are the one who knows the WHY behind its foundation and the inspiration that drove you to create it. You know the journey from idea to manifestation through to product development and growth. More than the cogs of it, you hold the most magical ingredient that no one else ever will – the love for what you have created. It is this love that creates natural connection points with clients and is the fuel to your innate writing ability – even if you don’t know it yet. If it’s copywriting for emails, Instagram, or Facebook, you can easily write your own creative, engaging content by following these tips.
You have the knowledge and the love; all you need is the routine and belief. These tips are also designed to help you consider how you can slot content writing into your already busy schedule.
Let’s go!
Taking time out
Content writing is a creative endeavour. To get you out of the daily grind and into a creative writing space it helps taking time away from your daily business routine. Switch off your phone, find a café or a picnic blanket in a nice location and focus only on writing. You will get more content written in less time if you take time out and invest in a writing practice.
Maintain a writing flow – create a regular writing habit
Taking time out is the first step. Doing this on a regular basis is the second. Try dedicating 1-hour a week to writing. At first it will feel like an effort. After a few weeks you will find that you will be keen for your 1-hour time out sessions to write as ideas start to flow and your writing style starts to develop. The discipline of maintaining a habit will be transformed in an exciting creative ritual that yields results.
One page of writing flow can be see you create 30 days of Instagram content.
Write down inspiration – as it happens
This one is important. Ideas come at the craziest, busiest times and we often dismiss them. When you start a writing practice you will find writing ideas will start to flow. Some will be ok, some great, and a lot will be WOW. A writing practice enhances your creativity and business intuition. This is the combo you are striving for to make great content. Unfortunately, the ideas and the time you set aside to write them don’t usually line up. When ideas do popup, keep a note of them on your phone in Notes. That way you will have ideas ready to go when you sit down for your 1-hour of weekly writing.
If you’re on a roll keep writing
Milk the magic when it happens. This is important for two reasons; 1. You can save time in the future by batching your content, and 2. When we acknowledge and appreciate a writing roll, when we milk it for all it offers and write in that space, more of this magic comes to us. The more you take time out and write, the more rolls with your content writing you will have. Appreciation is key here as it can shift you from insecurity to a confident batch babe in in weeks. Rather than quit with one post or article when you’re in the flow, keep writing and ride the magic writing wave. More milking = more magic. You may not get another article written in the magic flow, but you may get ideas for the next the few. Add them to your journal or Notes on your phone so they are ready for your next writing session.
Read good content
This idea is an old one for all writers. To write good content it’s important to read good content. Our brains are like magnets when it comes to good writing. We pick up style and structure without realising. Become a magnet for good content.
Believe you can
Self-doubt is the killer to all creativity. Follow the steps above regardless of what your beliefs are about your creativity or writing style. Instead of thinking about it as a writing style, look at your content aim as “how may I serve”. This little trick takes you out of the self and lands you in front of the person you are wanting to talk too. A shift in perspective changes how you connect, engage and ultimately write about your business. If your business is technical by nature, this little trick helps you write in simple problem-solving terms. If your business is all about fun stuff, this technique helps you harness all the fun into “why she will love it” content.
